Configuring VRRP on the InRouter302 (IR302)

Objective:

Set up VRRP on the IR302 to ensure continuous network service in case the primary router fails.

Requirements:
  • Two or more IR302 routers.
  • Network connectivity among routers participating in VRRP.
  • Access to the web interface of the routers.

Steps:
  1. Plan Your VRRP Setup:

    • Determine which router will act as the Master and which will be the Backup.
    • Decide on a Virtual Router ID (VRID) which is unique to the VRRP group.
    • Choose a Virtual IP address that will be used by hosts on the LAN as their default gateway.
  2. Configure the Master Router:

    • Log into the web interface of the router designated as the Master.
    • Navigate to Network > VRRP.
    • Click on Add to create a new VRRP group.
    • Enter the Virtual Router ID (VRID).
    • Set the Priority to a higher value (e.g., 100). The Master router should have the highest priority.
    • Enter the Virtual IP address that will be shared among the routers.
    • Save the settings.
  3. Configure the Backup Router(s):

    • Log into the web interface of each router designated as a Backup.
    • Navigate to Network > VRRP.
    • Click on Add to join the existing VRRP group.
    • Enter the same Virtual Router ID (VRID) as set on the Master.
    • Set the Priority to a lower value than the Master (e.g., 80).
    • Enter the same Virtual IP address as configured on the Master.
    • Save the settings.
  4. Test the VRRP Configuration:

    • Ensure that all routers are correctly configured and connected.
    • From a host on the LAN, set the default gateway to the Virtual IP address.
    • Test connectivity through the default gateway.
    • Simulate a failure of the Master router (e.g., by disconnecting it from the network) and observe if the Backup router takes over seamlessly, ensuring continuous network service.
  5. Monitoring and Maintenance:

    • Regularly check the VRRP status on the routers to ensure they are functioning as expected.
    • Monitor network logs for any VRRP-related errors or messages that could indicate problems.

Additional Tips:
  • Always ensure firmware on all VRRP participating routers is up-to-date to avoid compatibility issues.
  • Consider setting up em
